Recent predictions about the potential harm that AI could cause have led to a long-running debate over whether AI should be regulated or continue its current course without further intervention. Could artificial intelligence escape human control and threaten humanity? Well, let’s first define the difference between a chat prompt and an AI agent.

A chat prompt asks AI to answer a question or do something based on a specific command. An AI agent is set up to pursue a goal by deciding what to do, taking actions, and checking the results. The agent can take multiple steps, work through a workflow, and decide the next steps.

An AI agent is provided with more capabilities to figure out the sequence of tasks needed to accomplish an objective, whereas prompting involves giving an instruction and retrieving a specific response. Another question is whether AI agents lack intention or are they technologies controlled by human beings. Are technology companies responsible for the risks agents impose on society?
With agents having more autonomy to access access outside networks and write code, policy experts should possibly consider creating more enforceable limits on advanced AI systems.
