New regulations have been proposed to impose more accountability on some of the largest fashion brands that generate more than $100 million in revenue. According to the Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act, also known as the fashion sustainability law, these fashion retailers must disclose their supply chains and ensure sufficient due diligence, including taking action to minimize adverse impacts on human rights and the environment.

If the bill is passed, New York would be the first state in the U.S. to enforce sustainability regulations in the fashion industry. These retailers would be required to keep track of every aspect of their supply chain, from reducing greenhouse gas emissions and minimizing energy waste to maintaining fair employee wages. Additionally, they would be required to disclose their material production and make it available to view online. Fashion brands earning over $100 million in revenue, according to the fashion sustainability act, would need to release a sustainability action plan that includes compliance within these provisions.

Many fashion companies are already utilizing efforts to embrace more sustainable production methods, from using organic fabrics and textiles to assimilating packaging that minimizes their environmental footprint. “Eco-friendly” packaging is the buzzword that relates to companies integrating renewable and compostable materials. Another method that some brands are using to become more sustainable is to incorporate packaging made with 100% raw materials.
